Happy Hour This Friday Young Dems!

To keep things fresh and lively, we have moved our next scheduled HCYD Happy Hour to a new location!  Our next happy hour this Friday, May 9th, 6-8pm, will be at Ernie's on Banks, 1010 Banks St. @ Montrose (map here).

Former HCYD President Max Cardenas is taking the Si TV "Crash The Parties" challenge to represent the Latino community as an election reporter at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Let's join together and help Max to win the challenge by voting on the Crash the Parties website.

We congratulate HCYD member Bill Kelly for being named the General Campaign Manager for the Harris County Democratic Party 2008 Coordinated Campaign! Bill has most recently served as Campaign Manager and Chief of Staff for local State Representative Ellen Cohen.  As General Campaign Manager for the HCDP coordinated campaign, Bill will be responsible for organizing and implementing the party's countywide effort to elect Democrats throughout Harris County.  For more information, read on below

The application deadline for the 2008 HCYD Scholarship and the YDA Minorirty Caucus Empowerment Fund is this Friday!  The HCYD Scholarship provides $500 for educational expenses in recognition of academic excellence, youthful leadership, commitment to fundamental Democratic principles and dedication to social justice.  Anyone who is currently a full-time student attending a university in Harris County can apply.  The YDA Minorirty Caucus Empowerment Fund is a stipend to help cover registration costs and boarding for Young Democrats of color attending national YDA meetings. The next YDA meeting is in Nashville on May 30-June 1st. For more information and to apply for these scholarships, please read on below.  

Are you planning on attending the Texas State Democratic Convention in Austin the weekend of June 5-7th?  HCYD has secured a rental house in Austin for members who will be attending this year's convention.  The total three day room rate will be $63/person with HCYD paying 30% of the total lodging cost.  Space is limited so to secure your spot please RSVP by sending an email to Roaxana at hcyd.events@gmail.com and paying the room rate online here.  For more information, read on below.

Congratulations to Bill Kelly

Fellow HCYD member Bill Kelly has been named the General Campaign Manager for the Harris County Democratic Party 2008 Coordinated Campaign!  Bill has most recently served as Campaign Manager and Chief of Staff for local State Rep. Ellen Cohen.  As General Campaign Manager for the coordinated campaign, Bill will be responsible for organizing & implementing the HCDP's countywide effort to elect Democrats across Harris County.  We look forward to assisting Bill and HCDP's efforts to turn Harris County blue!  Visit the Harris County Democratc Party website for more information.    



2008 HCYD Scholarship
Application Deadline - Friday, May 9th

HCYD is excited to announce that we will be awarding the HCYD scholarship for 2008. The scholarship provides $500 for educational expenses in recognition of academic excellence, youthful leadership, commitment to fundamental Democratic principles and dedication to social justice. Anyone who is currently a full-time student attending a university in the Harris County area can apply. To apply, complete the online application and return it with at least one letter of recommendation from a professor. Applications must be received by mail or email by Friday, May 9th, 2008. Applications may be mailed or e-mailed to Meghan Smith, Harris County Young Democrats at P.O. Box 131461, Houston, TX 77219 / hcyd.development@gmail.com.  Scholarship will be awarded at the HCYD May General Meeting.   


YDA Minority Caucus Empowerment Fund
Application Deadline - May 9th

The Young Democrats of America (YDA) Minorirty Caucus is now accepting applications for the Empowerment Fund, a stipend to help cover registration costs and hotel rooms for YDs of color to be able to attend YDA meetings. The next YDA meeting is in Nashville on May 30-June 1st. Deadline to apply is May 9, 2008. Click here to access the application. Join the Houston Stonewall Young Democrats for the May Monthly Meeting on Monday, May 12th, 6:30pm-8pm, at Stag's Head Pub, 2128 Portsmouth St. (map here).  HSYD members will be discussing the upcoming Houston Pride Parade activities, fundraising event planning and other future events.  We will also be letting our members know how they can apply to be a delegate for the Democratic National Convention in Denver.  Hope to see you there!
